LVMH Might Buy RODARTE
LVMH Might Buy RODARTE
Sep 3, 2010
Late August means acquisition time in luxury conglomerate land, so we're not surprised to hear that LVMH has been chatting up Rodarte, as WWD reported this morning.
The article stressed that no deal has been made, but that LVMH is still very interested in the Los Angeles-based fashion label, which has yet to turn a profit.
While LVMH has stayed away from fashion acquisitions over the last couple of years-the company has been more interested in buying yachts and such-it did scoop up 49% of ethical clothing brand Edun in late 2009.
WWD suggests that the purchase of Edun shares was simply a symbolic one driven by founder Bono's fame. However, we hear otherwise. The conglomerate wants to compete with PPR and make Edun the "Stella McCartney of LVMH."
The most recent move was to bring on lauded designer Sharon Wauchob as creative director-her first collection will debut at New York Fashion Week this September.
So this latest news isn't so surprising. There's definitely room to grow Rodarte-the company brought in a measly $2 million in sales last year. But if acquired, we're betting LVMH would attempt to find a place for the sisters at an established Parisian fashion house where they could make the behemoth some real money. |

LANVIN LOVES H&M
LANVIN TO DESIGN EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION FOR H&M THIS AUTUMN
Sep 2, 2010
H&M is proud to announce that its next designer collaboration will be with Lanvin, one of the most influential brands of the 21st century. Designed by Lanvin's artistic director Alber Elbaz, and mens wear designer Lucas Ossendrijver the collection will go on sale in around 200 H&M stores. It will be launched November 20th in North America and on November 23rd in the rest of the world. The collection of both womens wear and menswear will be revealed to the world on November 2, just three weeks before the clothes hit the store, making the launch of Lanvin for H&M among the most anticipated fashion events of the year.
"H&M approached us to collaborate, and see if we could translate the dream we created at Lanvin to a wider audience, not just a dress for less. I have said in the past that I would never do a mass-market collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public. This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world." Alber Elbaz, artistic director of Lanvin.
"We are thrilled about Lanvin's collection for H&M, it is such an exciting moment. Lanvin will bring to H&M a luxurious French tradition that is also modern and playful. It is very much a Lanvin collection, using their cut and tailoring, with lots of focus on form and details for both women and men. The launch in November is going to be full of wonderful surprises." Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M.
Since joining Lanvin as artistic director in 2001, Alber Elbaz has transformed the Paris-based label, founded in 1889 by Jeanne Lanvin, into a fashion powerhouse bursting with ideas and creativity. Alber Elbaz has pioneered there some of the biggest trends of the past decade - ribbon, bows, pearls, raw edges, sumptuous color and metallic embellishment among many others. Alber Elbaz has a mastery of cut and an instinct for cloth which leaves a very personal signature on his work, ensuring that all Lanvin clothes are instantly recognizable. Since the introduction of a new menswear line in 2006, Alber Elbaz has also transformed the male wardrobe, bringing a relaxed elegance to men's clothing which is as special as the womenswear.
Lanvin is the latest brand to collaborate with H&M, with previous collections designed by the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Commes des Garcons and Sonia Rykiel. In a new twist, the Lanvin for H&M collection will be revealed to the world through a special film which will be launched on November 2. The film will be available for all to see online at www.hm.com . Following the film’s debut, it will be just three weeks before customers have the chance to get their hands on a covetable piece of Lanvin for H&M.

Runway Relief: Coco Rocha and Nine West
Stomping for a Cause
Sep 1, 2010
Photo: FilmMagic
Despite the sweltering temperatures in New York City today, forty top models including Coco Rocha, Jessica White, Michelle Alves, Hannah Holman, and Lyndsey Scott took over the Meatpacking District for a photoshoot with Nigel Barker to kick off Nine West’s Runway Relief program. Dressed in personally styled t-shirts, jean shorts, and the Nine West boots, the girls forgot about the heat and focused on the amazing cause that brought them all together.
“We wanted to capture the energy of Fashion Week and turn it into a meaningful way to give back,” explained Stacy Lastrina, CMO of Jones Apparel Group. “This Fashion Week it is all about the models strutting their stuff and walking the extra mile for a great cause in the Nine West boot.”
As the leader of the pack, Coco showed off her professionalism and dedication to the charity, shrugging off the ever increasing heat index and her fall inspired outfit for the afternoon saying, "That’s what we do - we wear leather coats in the heat!"
While Coco’s already admitted to her competitive nature regarding the charitable initiative, she’s not the only model who’s dedicated to the cause. Between family members who have been affected by breast cancer and the desire to help a worthy cause, a brilliant selection of models plan to donate their time and stomping power to the Runway Relief program from now through Fashion Week. For every mile of steps accumulated by the models, Nine West will make a monetary donation to Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. |

Me, Too, Says Elle!
Elle Fashion Runway Show
Aug 25, 2010
(NEW YORK) With a colossal amount of Fashion's Night Out activities and close to 1,000 retailers participating on September 10, the most massive FNO-related affair is happening on September 7 at Lincoln Center; "Fashion's Night Out: The Fashion Show" will take place that Tuesday, seating 1,500 spectators with over 150 models walking the runway in designs chosen by Vogue. But the FNO runway event isn't the only fashion show kicking off Fashion Week; Elle is getting in on the runway action, too! The ELLE Fashion NEXT runway show will take place Thursday, September 9 at 9am at the David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Elle editors have selected twenty-two students from the Rhode Island School of Design and each will showcase their designs. The judging panel is a formidable one, made up of designers and Elle editors; Tommy Hilfiger, Derek Lam, Nicole Miller, Waris Ahluwalia, Marcia Patmos, Kate Spade, Joe Zee, Anne Slowey and Alexis Bryan Morgan, among others, will all take their place behind the judge's panel.
The winner will be announced at the show and awarded the ELLE & RISD Design Award and a $25,000 grant. The semi-finalists will also have a chance to win the ELLE People's Choice Award and a $10,000 grant, as chosen by Elle.com users (voting goes live on September 9). Additionally, Maybelline New York will present a semi-finalist with a design achievement grant and Kate Spade New York will provide a mentorship award. Elle is also producing a five-part documentary-style websiode series chronicling each student’s journey from RISD to Lincoln Center, featured on Elle.com. |
