| Orange DutchyDress Brews up Drama at World Cup |
| Jun 16, 2010 |
Who's behind this notorious orange Bavaria DutchyDress that's running around the World Cup?
Dutch fashion designer Olcay Gulsen of the women's fashion label SuperTrash was asked by the Dutch beer company Bavaria to design the first ever World Cup item made specifically for women-so instead of female fans showing their support by wearing a man's soccer jersey, Bavaria asked SuperTrash to design a dress for women to wear in support of the Netherlands National Team during this year's World Cup.
After the big, public unveiling of the DutchyDress, it caused so much commotion that it sold out in less than a month (over 200,000 dresses),however, the Dutch football union KNVB was not as accepting and even announced Sylvie and other female fans would not be welcome in the stadium wearing the orange dress. The actual dress has no visible Bavaria logo, but the public attention the DutchyDress has been receiving has created a conflict among sponsors as the Dutch football union's beer sponsor is Heineken and the 2010 World Cup official beer sponsor is Budweiser.
Well the DutchyDress drama has continued in South Africa and on Monday during the Netherland vs. Denmark game, 36 women (out of 60) were escorted out of the Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium for wearing the Bavaria DutchyDress by SuperTrash to support the Netherlands National Team. (Netherlands won!)
SuperTrash has definitely started a new fashion trend in sports/soccer history as we hear that other teams are talking about approaching designers to create something specific for their female fans to wear too. With the Netherland's National Team so strong, I wonder how South Africa & Budweiser will handle hundreds of DutchyDresses running around for the remainder of the World Cup?
Not only has the Bavaria DutchyDress by SuperTrash marked a moment in fashion history, but it is also brewing up a ton of drama among the beer sponsors -yes, a dress.
SuperTrash creative director Olcay Gulsen asked Sylvie van der Vaart, model and wife of Rafael van der Vaart of the Netherlands National Team, to be the face of the orange World Cup DutchyDress. It was first revealed during a Netherlands vs. Mexico game when handfuls of girls in the bleachers started stripping down in the middle of the game, but underneath all of their clothes was the Bavaria DutchyDress. |
