You know when you spot Anna Wintour clapping at the end of a fashion show, it was a good one. So was the scene at Vera Wang's 11 a.m. show on Tuesday where Great Gatsby elegance was fused with a little bit of gothic edge. A colossal metal gate most likely found guarding a chateau set the backdrop on the stage as did dramatic classical music. When the first model stepped out we instantly thought we were witnessing guests arriving at some swanky aristocratic fete during the 1930s. Loose fitting frocks featured accordion pleated tiers, wool jackets were encrusted with exaggerated amounts of fox fur and the shoes, oh my, they were fabulous black platform booties a la Jeffrey Campbell stilo. What began with several black ensembles showcasing jackets and coats paired with skinny pants quickly brightened up to a palette of grays that varied from silver, stone, pebble, charcoal and pewter on full length shift dresses. Simplicity proved that less is more with details such as plunging racer backs and criss crossing straps that oozed understated sexiness. In an era where too many women seem to be baring too much skin, we liked how Ms. Wang responded by combining high neck frocks with subtle cuts. She also made sure to add a sprinkling of color for those of us that prefer to warm up our wardrobe during those drabby winter months. She didn't give us many options except for ivory, dusty pink and mustard, but when it comes to the ex figure skater whose made her fortune in bridal wear, we'll take what we can get happily.
