| Australian Supermodel Jennifer Hawkins Poses Nude and Unretouched for 'Marie Claire' |
| Jan 6, 2010 |
The controversy over photo retouching in women's magazines has reached a fever pitch in the past year. Critics argue the unrealistic images fed to women by both the magazines and their advertisers promote unhealthy body image expectations.
There are some magazines that ar working to change the status quo - at least some of the time. Glamour featured a shot of healthy model Lizzie Miller nude several months ago, which earned the mag plenty of thank yous from women tired of seeing stick-thin teenagers in their reading material.
Now, Australian Marie Claire joins the bunch, kicking off 2010 with an unretouched cover featuring beauty queen and TV presenter Jennifer Hawkins - a big celebrity down under. NY Mag reports that the issue supports Australia's Butterfly Foundation, which supports individuals battling eating disorders and body image issues.
Here's the thing: Hawkins still looks pretty perfect: she's still impossibly thin, blonde, and bronzed. Which isn't to say it's all Marie Claire's fault - if we want healthier images from our magazines, we really have to start thinking more about what we're buying.
